US Prisons Embracing ‘Video Visitation’ Technology

South Africa prisonPrisons and jails in the United States are gradually embracing a new technology into their system that will allow inmates get more intimate with families and friends who call them.

The new technology, video call, will allow inmates see their friends and family on a video screen as they talk to them. The modus operandi of the technology is similar to that of Skype, however comes with a unique feature where both the inmate and virtual visitor get to see each other via a glass screen.

Gary Humphrey, President of HomeWav, providers of the new technology believes it will save family and friends who may want to visit their relations in jail cost and time, adding that the technology is not and intended profit-making one.

Its costs 50 cents per minute to make a call using the technology which is being adopted by several prisons across the US.

‘Video Visitation’ according to some prison authorities will save them lots of cash as extra wardens will not be needed to escort inmates to and fro during visiting hours.

While many fear this technology will lead to the elimination of in-person visits hence having a physiological and emotional effect on inmates who may barely have physical contact with relatives while serving their term, some are of the view that the technology will go a long way to bridge the gap of distance between them.
